April 22, 2023 marked Earth Day, a day to celebrate the Earth and demonstrate support for protecting our planet.
Comcast is taking this opportunity to reflect on our sustainability journey and look ahead to move towards a greener future with initiatives throughout all parts of our businesses.
Comcast Issues $1 Billion Green Bond to Fund Clean Energy, Infrastructure Projects
In early February, Comcast announced the issuance of a $1 billion 10-year green bond that give investors the opportunity to support Comcast’s environmental efforts and goals. This includes reducing its renewable energy, energy efficiency, green buildings, campuses, communities and cities, clean transportation, and circular economy adapted products, production technologies and processes.
Comcast’s goal is to be carbon neutral by 2035. Besides the initiative above, the following environmental efforts have been made:
- Reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions 31% since 2019.
- More than doubling the use of renewable electricity from 2020 to 2021.
- Decreasing Comcast Cable’s energy per consumed terabyte nearly 30% from 2019 to 2021.
- Piloting electric and hybrid vehicles in select locations, including debuting the first four electric trams in the Universal Studios Hollywood fleet.
- Increasing the number of green buildings it owns or occupies, including the LEED Platinum Comcast Technology Center.

Comcast to Source Clean, Renewable Electricity for Nearly Half of New England Operations
Earlier this year, Comcast announced an agreement with Constellation to purchase 70 megawatts (MW) of renewable solar electricity from the Gravel Pit Solar project in East Windsor, Connecticut for nearly half of its Comcast Cable and NBCUniversal operations across New England.
This new solar project will power approximately 43% of Comcast’s operations across Connecticut and Massachusetts, providing carbon-free electricity. The contract of the Connecticut-made renewable energy represents an annual volume of approximately one year’s worth of electricity use for more than 15,000 homes.

Universal Filmed Entertainment Group to Launch GreenerLight Program
In March, Universal Filmed Entertainment Group (UFEG) announced the launch of the GreenerLight Program. This is an initiative focused on bringing sustainability across the entire filmmaking process through development, production and distribution.
UEFG has been working on reducing environmental impact on its sets for more than a decade through the Sustainable Production Program. The GreenerLight Program will continue to expand this commitment to sustainability starting from even earlier phases in production including script development, locations and set needs, as well as on-screen behaviors.
The Studio has partnered up with key filmmakers, talent, and nonprofit organizations such as the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) to bring together people who are passionate about sustainability and create a new normal in protecting the planet.

Our Sustainable Future
Comcast recently brought together hundreds of employees for Our Sustainable Future, an event focused on inspiring and empowering teams across the company to support our environment goals. This allows us to reflect on our progress and challenges to work even harder to reaching our goal of being carbon neutral by 2035.
Sara Cronenwett, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Environmental Sustainability for Comcast Corporation, lists three themes that will unify us on the journey towards a more sustainable future including building the best products, constantly evolving sustainable design, and using our platforms as an opportunity for good.
