The Unbreakable North Bay Spirit

North Bay Spirit

We have always known the unity and strength of the community in the North Bay. However, the devastating North Bay Fires of 2017 that destroyed 245,000 acres and displaced 90,000 residents shed light on the immense unity and love of its people. What the world witnessed during this devastating time was the unbreakable and resilient North Bay Spirit of the people of the community.

Comcast NBCU is excited to announce it is partnering with Pulitzer Prize-winning media outlet, The Press Democrat, to launch The North Bay Spirit Award to encourage volunteerism, raise visibility of nonprofits and create a spirit of giving.

Each month, The Press Democrat will publish an article and video highlighting remarkable individuals who are making a difference in our community. “People who come up with creative solutions to community problems and go all-in for a cause with a leadership style that inspires others,” The Press Democrat reads.

Readers will be able to discover a new North Bay Spirit honoree every month in the Sunday Sonoma Life section of The Press Democrat and watch each of their stories here.

The first North Bay Spirit story was published last Sunday and highlights the journey and dedication of Krista Gawronski, Mr. Pickles owner, founder of the The Fabulous Women and inspirational writer. Krista, throughout small events in living rooms or big conferences, raises funds for families in need on the Sonoma County community. The group led by Krista has raised over $400,000, mostly through small donations of $20 or less.

“The deadliest fires of 2017 impacted the community of Santa Rosa and the surrounding areas, but it brought to light the strength and resilience of our community. The North Bay Spirit Award is our way to show that indeed the North Bay Spirit is unbreakable,” said Steve Falk, CEO, Sonoma Media Investments, which owns The Press Democrat.

“You don’t have to wear a cape to be a Super Hero. In the past two years, we have discovered the stories of regular people doing extraordinary acts of kindness expecting nothing in return. We can’t think of a better partner than The Press Democrat to highlight the stories of these individuals who are making an impact in the North Bay. Comcast supports this community, because we live and work here. We are part of the North Bay Spirit,” shared, John Gauder, Regional Vice President, Comcast.
