Comcast CLYLP Fellowship Kicks Off its 14th Year with a Welcome Event

Comcast and Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Project (CLYLP) recently welcomed this year’s group of Fellows with a meet and greet event.

CLYLP is one of Comcast’s long-standing community partners. With over 4,400 alums, this 41-year-old program continuously focuses on developing leadership skills in high school students throughout the state. This is the 14th year the Comcast CLYLP Fellowship program has taken place, where 10 alumni were selected for a summer internship at the CA State Capitol. During this time, the alumni had the opportunity to attend conferences, take part in mock hearings, and gain exposure to different people throughout the state, allowing them to learn more about how the government works in a hands-on way.

This year, the 10 Fellows heard from Comcast, NBC Bay Area, and Telemundo 48 through a welcome event that featured Latino professionals.

Lennies Gutierrez, Director of Government Affairs for South Bay and Southern Peninsula areas at Comcast California, was a former CLYLP student. She noted that one of the most inspiring experiences of the program were events like this, where there were opportunities to meet a variety of speakers who looked like her. This program opened her eyes to a career in public policy and, ultimately, brought her to Comcast. Now, she found herself on the other side of it, moderating this panel and sharing her inspirational story with today’s young leaders.

The event started off with a warm introduction from Comcast and CLYLP, followed by introductions from the current Fellows. The next portion of the meet and greet featured two career panels with Comcast, NBC Bay Area, Telemundo 48. During this time, the employees shared the ways that previous internships, mentorships, and education helped shape their careers. All the panelists held various positions and had different educational backgrounds, allowing for a thoughtful conversation about career opportunities by sharing meaningful and personable advice. Following this, they discussed how Comcast, NBC Bay Area, and Telemundo aims to support Latino aspiring leaders before ending the event with a Q&A portion.

Comcast is continuously investing in youth leadership development; the Comcast CLYLP Fellowship plays a large roll in this. In looking for leaders within the community, events like these allow us to connect with students and make them feel welcome into the Comcast family!
