A Joyful Weekend Honoring Black Culture

The #BEN Black Employee Network Signage Held By Youth Members

On the tail-end of Black History Month, hundreds of people came to the heart of Oakland to commemorate the influence of the African American community in today’s culture at a celebration known as Black Joy Parade.

Comcast, a continuous proud sponsor of the event, participated in the parade with a beautifully adorned float featuring commissioned art by local artists Derrick Shavers and Timothy B. and Comcast employee Gino Stewart providing music from atop the float. Comcast employees representing the Black Employee Network (BEN) resource group marched with special guests, the Boys and Girls Club of Oakland. This was the second year that Comcast BEN California partnered with the Oakland Boys & Girls Clubs. This year 10 members of the BGC were able to represent the organization in the Black Joy Parade.  While this is Comcast’s third-year participating as a sponsor, Comcast’s BEN resource group has been a participating partner of the event since its inception.

Comcast was also present at the event’s festival. This year, Xfinity hosted the Black Vines Lounge in partnership with TV One and Black Vines. TVOne is a cable network that offers programming that centers around the African American experience, via a broad mix of original lifestyle and entertainment-oriented series, documentaries, movies, and concert performances. Black Vines is California’s prominent curator of wine by Black winemakers and vintners, offering a selection of specially curated wines.

At the Xfinity-Sponsored lounge, local digital influencers, Chauncey Woods and Shan Berries, hosts of the digital series, She’s Into It, hosted a special episode, shot live from location, and it highlighted Comcast’s participation in the Black Joy Parade.
