Comcast is Installing Back-Up Battery Cabinets in Your Neighborhood

As we continue to prepare ourselves and our families for another dry year in California, Comcast is working hard to prepare you for fire season and the likelihood of potential Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) by electric utilities, such as PG&E.

Comcast services require commercial power to operate. During a PSPS event, Comcast services including Internet and video, as well as landline and even mobile phone services for homes and businesses, may stop functioning within hours after the commercial power is shut off. We understand this disruption to services may have a major impact on people’s lives and businesses.

However, since 2021, Comcast has been installing back-up power cabinets in communities that the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) designates as Tier 2 and Tier 3 High Fire Threat Districts.

These back-up power cabinets will provide at least 72 hours of power to Comcast’s network serving most customers in Tier 2 and Tier 3 High Fire Threat Districts. This enables Xfinity Residential and Comcast Business customers impacted by a Public Safety Power Shutoff to retain their Comcast services (Internet, video, and landline phone) during a commercial power outage, provided their home or business has a backup power source.

Before, during, and after a PSPS event, Comcast works hard to keep our customers informed. We proactively communicate through SMS text messages, email, social media, and through our California Comcast Blog (which is available in English & Spanish).

If you are an Xfinity or Comcast Business customer, be sure to update your contact information in your My Account app. Be especially sure that we have your mobile phone number and sign up to receive text alerts so you can stay updated during a Public Safety Power Shutoff event.

Lastly, on the California Comcast Blog we provide a wide range of information and resources to help customers be prepared, stay informed, and remain safe and connected during a Public Safety Power Shutoff event.
