Operation Old Glory: A Tribute to Service in Elmira

Operation Old Glory: Comcast replaced a worn flag at Vacaville Fire District Station 65 in Elmira, California

In honor of Military Appreciation Month and Memorial Day, we are reflecting on our time in the rural community of Elmira. Back in March, we hosted a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate Comcast’s network expansion in the area. Prior to the groundbreaking, members of our Veteran’s Network Employee Resource Group (VetNet ERG) gathered for “Operation Old Glory,” replacing a tattered flag hanging outside of the Vacaville Fire District Station 65 in Elmira.

Operation Old Glory, a free flag replacement program started by military veteran employees, is our way of honoring our nation’s greatest symbol and what it represents to people in our communities. Through this program, our teammates work together to replace worn or damaged flags outside homes and businesses at no cost to the property owners. Any home or business is eligible for a free flag replacement, not just those subscribed to our services. We also ensure that all worn flags are retired with respect and strict adherence to military protocols.

Mark Helsel, Captain of the Vacaville Fire Protection District, served all over the world as a Marine and has been a volunteer firefighter for nine years. “With the wind that comes through here, it tears up flags, especially here in the Delta area,” states Mark. “For Comcast to notice it and be willing to replace it, I really appreciate what Comcast is doing.”

Comcast is thankful to the brave individuals committed to serving our county. Today and all year round, we honor your legacy, sacrifice, and dedication to our country.
