Below is a personal perspective and experience from Adriana Arvizo, Multicultural Public Relations Manager for Comcast California.
It’s been 15 years since I emigrated from Mexico to the U.S. to attend college and pursue a career in journalism.
A lot has changed in these past 15 years, including the way I interact with my loved ones in Mexico. I remember during my first years in this country, I would go to the convenience store, buy a $5 long distance telephone card, scratch the code in the back just like a lottery ticket and use the code on the back to call my parents once a week, usually on Sundays. After a couple hours, a recording would let me know that my time was up. That meant that I ran out of money and I had a minute left. I would quickly tell my parents that it was time to say good-bye and they would proceed to talk fast and tell me how much they loved me and missed me, then suddenly the call would disconnect in the middle of a sentence.
Now, 15 years later, phone cards and conversations ending mid-stream long gone! I don’t even have to look for the best long distance plan among cell phone carriers anymore because now I talk to my family in Mexico almost every day using the Internet. I can call them using Facebook, What’s App and Skype, just to name a few apps; or even better I can ‘FaceTime’ them and it’s almost like were in the same room.
Comcast understands that using the Internet is the new way to maximize your cell phone. That’s why the newly launched Xfinity Mobile service combines its existing network of 18 million WiFi hotspots with the nation’s largest, most reliable 4G LTE network through its partnership with Verizon.
If you are an Xfinity Internet customer, you can save money on your cell phone bill by switching to this new service that costs $12 per 1 gig or $45 for unlimited data. And why is Xfinity Mobile so convenient? Because customers can switch from the “By the Gig” data option to “Unlimited” at any time during the month depending on their usage at the time. And because the service moves seamlessly between WiFi and the 4G LTE Network, it helps save money.
To promote Xfinity Mobile’s debut, Comcast is bringing the Los Angeles based band, Las Cafeteras, to Northern California for a series of free intimate, acoustic performances at three of its stores: Fresno, Oakland and San Jose and we are hella excited!
Attendees will also have an opportunity to meet the band, get an autograph and snap a pic!
We are also using this opportunity to get in the spirit for Día de los Muertos. During the performances there will be free professional artistic sugar face painting, giveaways and for your story on Snapchat, we’ll have a cool customized filter. Plus you’ll have the opportunity to win Las Cafeteras gear by tweeting us your best selfie using #XfinityMobile.
Born and raised east of the Los Angeles River, members of Las Cafeteras are remixing roots music while telling modern day stories. Las Cafeteras creates a positive message by fusing vibrant music with a unique East LA sound. Their Afro-Mexican beats, rhythms, and rhymes deliver inspiring lyrics that document stories of a community seeking love and justice in the concrete jungle of Los Angeles. Las Cafeteras uses music as a vehicle to build bridges among different cultures and communities, and create “a world where many worlds fit.”
In this difficult time of tragedy throughout our country and elsewhere, we want to heal through music. We want to celebrate life, honor and stay connected to our culture and most importantly, we want to stay connected to what matter the most: Our loved ones.
