National Grandparents’ Day is still on our minds, and Comcast is grateful for grandparents who serve as pillars of their families and communities. Grandparents are leaders for the generations who follow them, enduring change and overcoming obstacles over the course of their life journeys.
One of the biggest obstacles that grandparents continue to face is the digital divide. With technology evolving exponentially, the world looks different today than it did when our grandparents were growing up.
In an effort to close the digital divide and bring our elders up to speed, Lady Shaw Senior Center in Chinatown, San Francisco partnered with the Self-Help for the Elderly organization, hosting a program where digital connectors teach senior citizens how to navigate technology. Through our partnership that includes grants and laptop donations, Comcast provides Lady Shaw Senior Center with the funding and tools it needs to continue running its Internet Essential classes, which provide training on digital devices like tablets, smartphones, and laptops.
Since 2010, Comcast has also funded Self Help for the Elderly’s inter-generational youth digital connectors program, where younger generations help older generations learn about the latest technology. This program gives youth the opportunity to connect with the elderly and provide personalized training to those who need it.
Comcast believes that closing the digital divide and supporting digital literacy programs, such as Self Help for the Elderly, are essential as technology continues to grow and evolve.
