Through creativity and imagination for a better tomorrow, Black changemakers and icons have and continue to propel innovation forward in America. These innovators, both past and present, share the common thread of thinking outside the box and pushing the bounds of norms, laws, and expectations. This month and all year long, Comcast is honoring Black changemakers and icons by highlighting how innovators in our communities have paved the road for culture shifters today and beyond.
Honoring Black Changemakers
Throughout this month, Comcast Newsmakers is spotlighting changemakers who are committed to elevating and championing Black communities. Comcast Newsmakers is a forum for leaders to tackle issues that matter as the longest-running news and public affairs platform of any cable operator in the country. Featured guests include Maya Wiley of The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, Marc Morial of the National Urban League and a member of Comcast’s external Corporate DE&I Advisory Council, Spencer Overton of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, activist Adjoa B. Asamoah, and more. Interviews – exploring topics ranging from political representation to race-based hair discrimination – are available to Comcast customers on Xfinity X1, Flex, and Stream using the voice command “Comcast Newsmakers,” and free to the public at ComcastNewsmakers.com.
Honoring the Local “Icons Among Us”
Black Joy Parade is a non-profit based in Oakland, CA that celebrates the Black experience and the community’s contribution to history and culture with its signature parade and celebration, partnerships and events. Since its inception in 2017, Comcast has proudly supported Black Joy Parade, participating in the procession and joining the community celebration.
Three years ago, Comcast teamed up with Black Joy Parade and introduced the Icons Among Us program, an initiative to recognize and spotlight local activists and leaders dedicated to being a warrior for racial equality. This award has become an extension of the organization and a popular initiative that the community actively engages in. Upon selection, Icons will receive a $5,000 contribution to a nonprofit of their choice to recognize their commitment and contribution to creating more space for Black joy to thrive. This year, Black Joy Parade will be on Sunday, February 26th at 12 PM in downtown Oakland. Join us as we celebrate the Black experience past, present, and future with the Bay Area Community and announce the 2023 Icons Among Us.
